COMING APART  (1969)

Rip Torn as a psychiatrist who sets up a secret camera in his office, recording his patients and his
sexual conquests.   He also records his own slow mental breakdown.  This film is a MASTERPIECE,
done in the style of a Warhol film (long takes, abrubt edits) ... the result is one of the best examples
Ive ever seen of a fictionalized documentary.  Gut wrenching performances by Torn and Sally Kirkland,
with lots of nudity and sexual content (originally rated X in the 60s).  Directed by Milton Moses Ginsberg.
(2:00)  (A/A) - OP

Directed by Conrad Rooks; a controversial, startling, and hypnotic mix of music and visuals
is a semi-autobiographical psycho-drama, following one addict's journey from sickness to health,

GETTING STRAIGHT (1970)

GONE IN 60 SECONDS  (1977)

Directed by H.B. Halicki; the original drive in classic is basically one long car chase through

I LOVE YOU, ALICE B. TOKLAS  (1968)

One of the few 1960s satires of the hippie culture that doesn't appear to be concocted
by grumpy old men, I Love You, Alice B. Toklas stars Peter Sellers as Harold Fine, a staid,
fortysomething Jewish attorney. Engaged to the equally straitlaced Joyce (Joyce Van Patten),
Harold wistfully dreams of having a more exciting lifestyle. Through a fluke, Harold is obliged
to drive a station wagon emblazoned with "psychedelic" imagery; it is with this vehicle that he
picks up his flower-child brother Herbie (David Arkin), and Herbie's groovy chick Nancy
(Leigh Taylor-Young). Rather enjoying the company of people outside of his establishment orbit,
Harold visits Nancy at her pad, where she plies him with "hash brownies" -- concoctions
laced with marijuana. His inhibitions released by the spiked pastries, Harold kicks over the
traces, grows his hair to shoulder length, and embarks upon an affair with Nancy.  But when
the effects of the brownies wear off, Harold suddenly feels like the rather foolish
middle-aged man that he is.  The beauty of I Love You, Alice B. Toklas is that it
patronizes neither the hippies nor the Establishment characters; both groups are shown
as human beings rather than agit-prop stereotypes.

THE MAGIC GARDEN
OF STANLEY SWEETHEART  (1970)

The first film of Don Johnson, as a naive and red-lipped young man and his flirtation with the
counterculture. Uncut print with all nudity (even though it was apparently taken from the very early days
of the TNT network, in the late 80s... I guess they showed films uncut and commercial free at that time.)
(1:45)  (B/B) - UR

MORE  (1969)

Directed by Barbet Schroeder; one of the great psychedelic masterpieces of all time, a film that caused a
counter-culture sensation in France that was comparable with the American reaction to EASY RIDER.
Mimsy Farmer stars as a jaded druggie who drags a naive German man into the world of controlled
substances on the gorgeous Mediterranean island of Ibiza.  ESSENTIAL to cult film collections, one of my
alltime favorites!  classic Pink Floyd soundtrack, cinematography by Nestor Almendros  ("Days of Heaven");
includes French theatrical trailer  (1:55) (A/A)  - OP  letterboxed & remastered Janus films print!

THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK   (1971)

PERFORMANCE  (1971)

Directed by Donald Cammell and Nicholas Roeg.  Starring Mick Jagger as a jaded rock singer

THE PEOPLE NEXT DOOR  (1970)

A counterculture film starring Eli Wallach; no review yet

THE REVOLUTIONARY  (1970)

A campus rebel (Jon Voight) allows himself to be drafted, then goes AWOL to aid a radical
bomber (Seymour Cassel) in his attempt to kill an anti-labor judge.  Well-written
character study that refuses to take sides, and presents various contradictory points of view.
Directed by Paul Williams (DEALING...), Costarring Robert Duvall.  (1:40)  (A/A)  -  UR

THE STRAWBERRY STATEMENT (1970)

Starring Bruce Davison as a college boy who is pulled into the
radical movement by his hippie girlfriend (Kim Darby)  (1:50) (A/A) - OP

THE VALLEY  (1973)

rare bird feathers in a remote New Guinea jungle; Pink Floyd soundtrack, companion piece

VANISHING POINT (1971)

Starring Barry Newman as Kowalski, a speedster (in more ways than one) trying to make it from
Denver to San Francisco in record time (on a bet)...  costars Cleavon Little as a Stevie Wonder-ish
disc jockey who is rooting for him, and Dean Jagger as a grizzled old prospector who helps him.
Classic soundtrack by Delaney and Bonnie.  Drive in classic with a smashing ending!
(1:40) (A/A)  - OP

An excellent Vanishing Point Website, with pics, behind the scenes, and soundclips!
 VANISHING POINT MANIA

VANISHING POINT  (1998)

The ultra-rare TV remake of the 1971 drive in chase film.  Starring Viggo Mortensen as a kinder, gentler
Kowalski ... he has good reasons for his run this time:  his wife is in the middle of a dangerous pregnancy,
and he is racing to her side (from Albuquerque to Boise).  All that stands in his way are arrogant, mouthy
Keystone cops and date with a 'dozer!  Co-starring Steve Railsback as the half crazed cop obsessed with
catching him (kind of like the Vic Morrow character in "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry") ...  David Keith as a
Fed that misunderstands Kowalski's motives ...  Jason Priestley (?!) as the radical radio host "The Voice"
(with a bizarre accent that sound kinda southern and kinda northern) ... and John Doe (of X) as the desert
biker (he also contributes to the soundtrack).  Updated to modern day with generous doses of political
correctness that almost kick it into the "camp" section ... scenes of Kowalski on some kind of Billy Jack /
Indian soul-cleansing trip ... Kowalski turning into an anti-government anti-hero, with the help of CNN, the
Voice, and his trusty cell-phone (after all, he is heading to Idaho) ... lots of strange, cheesy dialogue and
acting  (as often happens when modern filmmakers try to intentionally mimic the unintentionally cheesy style
of 70s drive-in films) ... and the girl on the motorcycle is only "half naked" this time.  But all in all, this is a
surprisingly well-done remake (especially for a TV movie).   They dont cheat on the ending, but Ill bet
you can guess his eventual reason for biting the bull(et)dozers (I did in the first ten minutes).
Transferred from a PAL-SECAM video release.  (1:30)  (B/B)  -  UR

ZABRISKIE POINT  (1970)

Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni; underrated counterculture film about a boy and girl romping
through Death Valley; soundtrack by Pink Floyd and Jerry Garcia. (1:55) (A/A) letterboxed
