THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN  (1982)

One of the best teen comedies of the early 80s, this story of the sexual misadventures of Gary
(Lawrence Monoson), a hapless and embarassingly chaste pizza delivery driver hoping to lose his
virginity.   The film has it all:  gratuitous pizza parlor settings, a locker room penis-measuring
contest (with bizarre shades of homoeroticism), crabs, a fat-kid schmiel, and Diane Franklin
as the "nice new girl in town".  Look for Kimmy Robertson (Lucy from Twin Peaks) as Rose,
the real "nice girl" of the story, who Gary passes up in the climactic kegger scene (idiot).   The film
is long out-of-print, due to contractual problems over the classic new-wave soundtrack, with tunes
by The Police, Devo, Tommy Tutone, Journey, REO Speedwagon, U2, The Cars, and many others.

A SMALL TOWN IN TEXAS  (1976)

This by-the-numbers action-revenge drama that plays like several other similarly-plotted,
good ol' boy pulp flicks of its era, such as Billy Jack (1971) and Walking Tall (1973). Timothy Bottoms
stars as Poke Jackson, a convict who's just been released from prison after a stint for drug trafficking.
The catch is that Poke was  innocent, having been framed for the crime by a corrupt lawman, Sheriff Duke
(Bo Hopkins).   Poke makes his way home to his beautiful girlfriend Mary Lee (Susan George) and their
illegitimate son, only to find that Duke has moved into his place as Mary's lover. Incensed, Poke sets out
on a course of vengeance that will pit him against the tough cop and culminate in a lethal car chase.
With supporting characters named "Bull," "Cleotus," and "Buford," the redneck pedigree of A Small
Town in Texas is distinct. The film was penned by screenwriter William W. Norton, who wrote several better
examples of this high-octane, macho genre, including White Lightning (1973) and Gator (1976).

TUSK (1978)

The other "lost" film of Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Perhaps meant as an experimental film with a dash of politics and two shakes of comedy,
this ultimately unpalatable mix by noted director Alexandro Jodorowsky might have had
too many cooks. Three people are cited as having had a hand in the story, written and
rewritten three times. The tale itself follows the life of a young British colonial woman in India
around 1900 or so and is based on a novel by Reginald Campbell. Rather than simply focus on
the woman (Cyrielle Clair), the tale juxtaposes her life with that of an elephant named Tusk
(convincingly played by Tusk, the elephant). The results are beautiful shots of the landscape
unmatched by the mix of characters ranging from a Maharaja to a reverend to a few idiotic
merchants and various types in-between.

live-action/animated feature to represent the Japanese and the negative way in which they are
perceived in the world.  Throughout the film, the title insects' behavior subtly mimics that of
contemporary Japanese society and their underlying belief that eventually they may come to rule
the world (in the director's opinion). The symbolism will be most accessible to those familiar with Japan,
those who aren't will appreciate an off-beat tale that is filled with moments of humor and sorrow.
The tale is told from a roach's eye view and is set in the chaotic apartment of the slovenly bachelor Saito.
Though the apartment's previous tenants waged a continuous battle against the roach colony therein,
Saito and the insects have reached a pleasant detente that allows the bugs to become complacent
and decadent, until a miilitaristic roach from a neighboring building flies into their isolated world and Saito
falls in love with the woman who terrorizes the visitor's apartment, great changes ensue.

UFORIA  (1983)

Talk about buried treasures. This film, shot in 1980 when Cindy Williams was still a TV star on Laverne
and Shirley, didn't actually reach theaters until 1985. Even then, it was barely released and remains a
film more talked-about than seen. But it's a tidy little comic treat, starring Williams as a seeker in a
small town who believes that she is destined to be taken away by a flying saucer. Which makes her
seemingly easy pickings for a pair of dueling evangelists (including the ever-reliable Harry Dean Stanton)
-- but she's more intuitive than she seems, even to her long-suffering boyfriend, played with wonderfully
gruff spirit by Fred Ward. This is one of those movies filled with unexpectedly funny moments while
never quite going where you think it will. --Marshall Fine

WHICH WAY IS UP?  (1977)

Based on Lina Wertmuller's The Seduction of Mimi, this film follows the dilemma of California orange
picker Leroy Jones (Richard Pryor) as he inadvertently becomes involved in a dispute between the
unionized workers and the management and is forced to leave his family to look for work in Los Angeles.
He falls in love with another woman, then finds out his wife has also been having an affair (with a local preacher),
and he plots revenge by bedding the preacher's Christianly, spinsterish wife.  This is by far Pryor's greatest film,
and not only that, it's one of the most side-splittingly hilarious comedies of all time!!   He also
appears in the roles of Reverend Thomas and as Rufus Jones, Leroy's feisty father.

WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR? (1968)

Shot over a period of several years and shown under the alternate titles I Call First and J.R., Martin
Scorsese's debut feature is an autobiographical look at the conflicted life of a young, Italian-American,
Catholic man in early 1960s New York.  J.R. (then-unknown Harvey Keitel) spends his days and nights
hanging out with his buddies in Little Italy, going to the movies, goofing around, and looking to score with
"broads." When he meets The Girl (Zina Bethune) on the Staten Island ferry, she rocks his world with a
shared admiration for John Ford's The Searchers (1956). A blond WASP beauty, the girl is more
sophisticated than J.R.'s parochial friends and shows him that there's more to life than the neighborhood.
J.R. falls in love, yet he refuses to soil her by sleeping with her. The girl, however, reveals that she is not a
virgin because of a date rape.  Locked in his Catholic virgin-whore complex, J.R. is disgusted by the
revelation, but, after a squalid evening with his friends, J.R. decides to do the righteous thing by forgiving
and marrying her.  The girl will have none of it, leaving J.R. to sort out his prejudices on his own. Originally
conceived as part of a trilogy with what would become Mean Streets (1973), the black-and-white Who's That
Knocking already has the acute grasp of daily life, fluid camera movements, and vivid editing of images to
music (such as the slo-mo scuffle to the lilting "El Watusi") that would define Scorsese's later work.
Despite a successful debut at the 1967 Chicago Film Festival, no distributor picked up the film until a soft porn
distributor agreed to release it if Scorsese added a nude scene. By the time, Who's That Knocking was finally
released in 1969, with J.R.'s sexy fantasy accompanied by The Doors's "The End," the loose counterculture
mood had made the focus on sexual repression seem out-of-date. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

WUSA  (1970)

Paul Newman served as co-producer of this allegorical drama and stars as Rheinhardt, a opportunistic drifter
who ends up in New Orleans and hits up his old friend Farley (Laurence Harvey), a con man turned phony
preacher, for a job.  Farley is able to get Rheinhardt hired on as an announcer at a local radio station,
WUSA, but the station is a right-wing propaganda mill that devotes its air time to venomous tirades against
political and social progress. Rheinhardt is happy to be making decent money, and he makes the friendly
acquaintance of a local working girl, Geraldine (Joanne Woodward), so he refuses to look his gift horse
in the mouth. However, when he finds out that WUSA is actually involved in shadowy political actions,
he is at a loss for what to do, especially after a naive and troubled social worker (Anthony Perkins)
is tricked into a race riot. Robert Stone wrote the screenplay, adapted from his novel A Hall of Mirrors.
