THE FILTH AND THE FURY   (2000)

Although their career lasted a bit less than two years, few rock bands have made a more dramatic
impact than the Sex Pistols, who quickly rose to international infamy as the best-known British
punk band, then fell apart shortly after their first American tour in a tempest of drugs, ego, and
infighting.  Manager Malcolm McLaren began making a film about the group while they were at the
height of their fame, but by the time McLaren and director Julian Temple completed The Great Rock
'n' Roll Swindle, the group's best-known member, bassist Sid Vicious, was dead, and the remaining
Pistols -- vocalist Johnny Rotten (aka John Lydon), guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook, and original
bassist Glen Matlock were in litigation against McLaren and refused to participate. In 1998, Temple began
working with the group's surviving members (who reunited for a brief tour in 1996) for this definitive
documentary of the Pistols' career, which combines new interviews with footage of legendary live performances
(such as their infamous Jubilee Day show on a ship sailing  past the Houses of Parliament), as well as newsreels
of the chaos that followed in their wake, including the TV appearance that changed them overnight from a
little-known cult band to national pariahs. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES
aka HAXAN  (1922)

Danish filmmaker Benjamin Christensen's obsession with bizarre lighting effects reached its
apotheosis with his 1920 masterpiece Witchcraft Through the Ages. Beginning in a deceptively sedate
fashion with a series of woodcuts and engravings (a technique later adopted by RKO producer Val Lewton),
the film then shifts into gear with a progression of dramatic vignettes, illustrating the awesome power of
witchcraft in the Middle Ages. So powerful are some of these images that even some modern viewers will
avert their eyes from the screen. Though obviously a work of pure imagination, the film occasionally takes
on the dimensions of a documentary, a byproduct of the extensive research done by Christensen before
embarking on the project (incidentally, the director himself can be seen in the film in a dual role as Satan
and the Doctor) Also known as Haxan, Witchcraft Through the Ages marked a parting of the ways for
Christensen and the Danish film industry; thereafter, he confined his activities to the German cinema,
before answering Hollywood's call in 1928. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

WONDERLAND  (1997)

A hilarious documentary about the planned community of Levittown, New York. O'Hagan conducts
interviews with longtime and one time Levittown residents (like rock singer Eddie Money and Zippy the
Pinhead cartoonist Bill Griffith), in an effort to explain how architects and developers took the idea of a
suburban paradise to extremes.  The community's elderly residents recall a time when beneath the
bland surface of Levittown, its houses equipped with all mod cons, behaviors like wife swapping
were commonplace. One mid-life Levittown "survivor" spends most of his days on a shrink's couch,
as he attempts to unravel the mystery of life after Levittown. It's well-crafted, poignant poke at suburban
planning and how ironically, it was meant to make life a little easier. ~ Denise Sullivan, All Movie Guide
