Jill Clayburgh stars as an opera diva who takes her hormonal young son (Matthew Barry)
to Italy after the sudden death of his stepfather (Fred Gwynne). The boy falls in with the
wrong crowd, becomes addicted to heroin, is seduced in an ice-cream parlor by Franco Citti
(to the tune of "Night Fever" by the BeeGees), and comes home to his horrified mother
in the throes of withdrawal. To ease his pains, she masturbates him through his pants, and this
leads to some fairly graphic (and very controversial) scenes of her secret incestual lusts coming out.
In confusion, the boy runs off to find his real father, and discover the source of his taboo secret.

A rather bizarre film that is also, in many ways, a masterpiece.
visually stunning at times in the usual style of the director of
LAST TANGO IN PARIS, THE LAST EMPEROR, 1900, and THE CONFORMIST
with lots of lush Italian scenery, and great acting all around ... one of Bertolucci's best!
The film also contains a cameo by a VERY young Roberto Benigni as a bumbling curtain-hanger.
It has gained a cult following (and mythic reputation) in the last few years despite no video release.

This is the very well-written George Malko adaption of the cult classic,
and it fills in a lot of the plot details that are left unsaid in the film,
including extended sequences (created by Malko) to give the story more depth.

These "extra scenes include:

Joe's friends are given names and personalities,
and the movie theatre encounter with Ariana is much more
in-depth and detailed than in the film. Whereas Bertolucci's
editing in the film is sometime confusing, the novelization
makes it much clearer what is happening betwen them.

There is an amazing continuation of the ice-cream parlor scene
with the Franco Citti character, who weeps over the death
of an Italian homosexual "poet" character who has just
been murdered by a young man in a squalid place ... an
obvious reference to director Pier Paolo Pasolini's demise.
Malko extended the sequence in this way as a tribute to the
friendship between Bertolucci and Pasolini, and as a sly
affirmation that one of Pasolini's ensemble is playing the part.

In the final scene, when Caterina is hugging Joe with relief,
in the film she says "they'd never arrest me, I'm crazy."
But in the book, she says "they'd never arrest me, I'm
pregnant." Even though she says it jokingly in both cases
(not to mention ironically), it definitely changes the
meaning of the scene. And if you watch the scene
in the film carefully, it's very obvious that the
word "crazy" was dubbed in, and that her
lips are actually saying the word "pregnant".
Was it done by Bertolucci, or a timid studio?
