THE "LOST" SORCERER THEME

William Friedkin's 1977 action/adventure, SORCERER,
is his true cult film. One of the most expensive films of its time,
it was completely overlooked in it's theatrical release (it played for about a week,
I was one of the fortunate few to experience it in a theatre). But it slowly started
to gain a word of mouth reputation from occasional pay-cable showings, until it
finally received a video release in the early 90s. It is now available on VHS and DVD.

The film's most famous element is it's electric soundtrack by
Tangerine Dream. It was their first, and they went on to become one
of the most celebrated and in-demand soundtrack artists of all time.

But there was one theme in the film that was not released as
part of the soundtrack, and the ironic part is, it is probably
the most hypnotic and surreal theme in the entire film.
As it turns out, Tangerine Dream didnt perform it.

The theme comes from a double-lp set released in the mid 70s
by jazz keyboardist Keith Jarrett. It was called HYMNS / SPHERES.

The albums consist of improvisations by Jarrett on the "Trinity Organ",
the larger of the two Karl Joseph Riepp (1710-1755) Organs
at the Benedictine Abbey Ottobeuren. No overdubs, technical
ornamentations or additions were utilized, only the pure sound of
the organ in the abbey is heard in the recordings. Many of the unique
effects, although never before used, were accomplished by pulling
certain stops part way, while others remained completely open or closed.

It is the second half of the selection "Spheres 3rd Movement"
that was used by Friedkin. The entire selection runs over 10 minutes,
so I have created an MP3 of the half of it that was used in the film.

It strikes me as an eerie approximation of a set of
bagpipes, with a stunning almost OM chant quality.
